One time Nanjeeyar attempted to carry the palanquin in which Bhattar was sitting.

Bhattar stopped him saying "This is inappropriate for one who is a sanyasi".

Nanjeeyar replied "I took on sanyasam because I thought it would allow me to perform uninterrupted service (free of the duties of a grhasta). However if that makes it impossible for me to do this service to you, then I will remove this saffron dress and put on a white dress again".

That is, any dharma (including varNAshrama) which does not fit in with service to the acharya is to be given up.
