Meaning:
O Lord! who is resting in Srirangam. Th Sun has reached the top of the mountain in the east (it has dawned). The heavy darkness has been lifted and the beautiful morning has dawned. The beautiful flowers have blossomed and their honey is overflowing. The Devas and kings have gathered in the direction of your eyes opening and are jostling each other. The male and female elephants that came with them as well as the big drums, are making a noise that resembles the noise of the mighty ocean, and it is spreading every- where. You should open your divine eyes and wake up.

Vyakhyana Saram:
The Sun has come like a lamp and dispelled the darkness, justifying his nature. Should You not enquire after him? Poygai Azhvar too saw the Sun as a lamp ("veyya kadhirOn viLakkAga"). If the Sun who is the lamp to the world dawns, shouldn't You who is the lamp to us also dawn? The Sun can only remove the external darkness; only You can remove the darkness in our minds. Therefore, You must wake up.

The Sun has reached the top of the eastern mountain; the darkness has been removed; the flowers meant to be used in worship have blossomed; those who worship you have gathered with their mounts and their instruments; You should open Your divine eyes and grace everyone. Those devas that worship you have rapidly gathered to obtain your divine grace ("yasyAvatararUpANi namasayanti divaukasa:"). Please wake up.

kadhiravan guNathisaic sigaram vandhaNaindhAn:
The Sun who is capable of removing the darkness in this world with his thousand rays of light has reached the top of the mountain in the east. He has come there with all his rays like those who bring the morning light to wake You up. Aren't those like the Sun who carry lamps when Your devotees pass through the archirAdhi path ("kadhiravaravar kainnirai kAttinar", "nAraNan thamaraik kaNdugandhu"), in order to save their positions? The Sun has come in great hurry to the eastern mountain to catch the glance of Your divine eyes as You wake up ("bhIShodEti sUrya:"). The Srirangam temple is next to the eastern mountain. Your divine feet too are in the same direction. Thus the Sun is present at Your divine feet ("mikka sensudarp parithi") while the crown that matches as thousand Suns is present on Your divine head ("kadhir Ayiramiravi eriththAloththa nINmudi") - how could You sleep between the two? The Sun has come to see the great beauty of Srirangam, its temple which is like a lamp lit on top of a mountain, its beautiful gardens and the great beauty of You sleeping.

ganaviruL aganRadhu:
The deep darkness of the night has left to match the arrival of the bright Sun. Darkness was ruling similar to enemies of the state doing their work despite the rule of the king ("iruL vIRRirunthathu pAr muzhudhum"). Just as those enemies withdraw when the king arrives with his armies, so too the darkness withdraws at the arrival of the Sun.

kAlaiyampozhuthAy:
The beautiful dawn which is meant for worship, has happened.

madhuvirinthozugina mAmalarellAm:
Due to the dawn of the Sun, the flowers meant to be used in worship have blossomed and are overflowing with honey

kAlaiyampozhuthAy madhu ... :
After the darkness was dispelled and the time for worship arrived ("brAhme muhUrtte sotthAya", "siRRam siRu kAlE"), the petals of the lotus flowers blossomed as the Sun's rays touched them. This is similar to the blossoming of the faces of the relatives in those days in a town when they hear the news of the return of their traveling relatives. As the flowers blossomed, honey was dripping between their petals. mAmalar refers to big flowers. ellAm refers to the fact that all flower types are included. The honey was gathered like a flood.

vAnavar ... :
The devas and the kings who had the pride that they were the ones to be prayed to, have lost their false pride and are now gathering near You and jostling each other to make sure that their desires are fulfilled. They have now gathered to worship You and being in a great hurry to do so, have filled all directions. The phrase "edhir thisai" can be taken either as the southern direction or considering it as "edhir edhir" it can be taken as meaning all directions.

edhir thisai niRaindhanar:
They gathered in the southeern direction which is where His divine eyes would look as they open.

ivarodum pugundha ... :
The noise made by their mounts (male and female elephants) and their drums sounds like a mighty ocean and fills all directions. The femal elephants came with the male elephants because they have come to Srirangam where pirAtti never leaves Her Lord. The noise of the drums sounds like the music played to wake up the Lord - similar to singing some song to wake up children.

adhirthalil:
Similar to the ocean that is diturbed as the Moon comes up, the drums make a mighty noise ("kumuRumOsai vizhavoli"). Should You who are a ocean ("perumpuRak kadal") not wake up? You who are the Lord of both worlds should wake up and accept our service, says Azhvar.

arangaththammA ... :
You who are the Lord of both worlds should wake up for the sake of myself who has no other refuge and accept my service, says Azhvar.
