Bhattar said the following to Nanjeeyar: "Be that the Lord is your refuge. Having said that, be that I too am your refuge".

That is, one should seek the refuge the Lord only through an acharya. If one goes directly, seeing his countless sins, the Lord might become angry with him. If one goes through an acharya, the Lord will pardon everything for the sake of the acharya.
