Sri Sita Lakshmana Bharata Shatrugna Hanumath Sametha Sri Ramachandra Parabrahmane Nama:

Vali's death

For the sake of Sugreeva, Sri Rama killed Vali. After Vali's death, Sugreeva was sad. Seeing Sugreeva's suffering, He too became very sad. Valmiki says "ityevam Artasya raghupravIra: shrutvA vaco vAlyanujasya tasya, sanjAta bAshpa paravIra hantA rAmo muhUrtam vimanA babhUva". "sanjAta bAshpa" shows that even after Sugreeva's tears had stopped flowing, Rama's did not. There are some who will cry on the outside but have no feeling on the inside. "muhUrtam vimanA babhUva" says that Rama was not like that and was hurting deeply on the inside.

The sage followed this with "sugrIvanchaiva tArAncha sAngadAm saha lakshmaNa:, samAna shoka: kAkutstha: sAntvayan idamabravIt". That is, Rama had as much suffering due to Vali's death as did Tara and Angada. He repeats this later with "sugrIveNaiva dInena dIno bhUtvA mahAbala:, samAna shoka: kAkutstha: preta kAryANyakArayat".

iyam sItA

The Compassion of Rama, mentioned by Sita, as being His dharma was described thus far. Janaka said "sahadharmacharI tava" when he gave Sita's hand in marriage to Sri Rama. Let us see next what was meant by this and demonstrated by Rama.

In our marriages we say "imAm kanyAm dharmaprajArttham vruNImahe" - that is, for the sake of following dharma and having children, we are getting married. The dharma spoken here is the gruhastAshrama dharma. That is, following the shAstras with the aid of one's wife. Janaka said "iyam sIta mama sutA sahadharmacharI tava". What is the dharma in which Sita will aid Rama?

When Sita Piratti advises Ravana to seek the right way, She says "vidita: sa hi dharmagya: sharaNAgata vatsala:". She says that He is righteous and immediately follows that by saying that He protects those who surrender to Him. Therefore, it is gathered that His dharma in this avatara is the protection of those who take refuge in Him. In his Dasahavatara stotra, in the shloka for Rama avatara, Vedanta Desikan points out the same thing - "sarvAvastha sakrutprapanna janatA samrakShaNaika vratI dharmo vigrahavAn". The parama dharma for the Lord is prapanna jana samrakShaNam. It is to help in this dharma that Sita piratti became His consort.

It is therefore that Pillai Lokachariar says "rakshikkum pOdhu pirAtti sannidhi vENdugaiyAlE idhilE shrI sambandham anusandhEyam" and "ivaL sannidhiyAlE kAkam thalai petradhu. adhillAmaiyAlE rAvaNan mudindhAn".

This is seen in many places in Sri Ramayanam.
