Sri Sita Lakshmana Bharata Shatrugna Hanumath Sametha Sri Ramachandra Parabrahmane Nama:

Kamba Ramayanam

In a verse in Kamba Ramayanam, the point that Rama killed Vali only because She was not with Him, is made.

"kOviyal dharumam ungkaL kulaththudhiththOrgatkellAm OviyaththezhudhavoNNA uruvaththAy udaimaiyanRO Aviyaich sanagan petRa annaththai amizhdin vandha dhEviyaip pirindhapinnaith thigaiththanai pOlum seygai"

The last line is of most importance. Its like a jewel in the sampradhayic ocean. In Bhagavad Gita, when explaining the purpose of His avatara, Sri Krishna says "paritrANAya sAdhUnAm vinAshAya cha dushkrutAm" - that is, protecting the virtuous and punishing the wicked. Both of these are performed well in Sri Ramayanam. But it is seen that when He is with Her even great sins are pardoned, whereas only when He is separated from Her, even those with minor transgressions are destroyed.

Rama first vanquished Thataka, Subahu and others with them. There are many who complain to date that He had killed a woman first. At this time, there was no connection yet with Sita. He was a brahmachari at the time He went with the sage Vishvamitra to protect his yaga. Had She been with Him at that time, the killing of Thataka would not have happened for sure.

Once He went to Mithila and took Sita as His consort, He did not kill anyone so long as She was by His side. Even those who committed extreme sins against Him were pardoned.

There are thoe who might make the following objection: Did He not kill Viradha, Kara and Dushana while being in the company of Sita - So, how can we say that no one was killed when He was together with Her?

Viradha Vadham

The story of Viradha is spoken in the second sargam of Aranya Kandam. The demon Viradha first abducts Sita. He leaves Her at one place and then carries Rama and Lakshmana into another forest, while Sita cries about being left alone. This is clearly shown at the end of the third sargam and the start of the fourth sargam. Thus, it can be seen that Viradha vadham occured only in the absence of Sita.

Additionally, Valmiki says that Viradha did not die even when attacked by the many arrows and swords of Rama and Lakshmana - "sa viddho bahubhir bANai: khaDgAbhyAnjcha parikshata:, nishpishTo bahudhA bhUmau na mamAra sa rAkshasa:". How did he die then? Viradha tells his history to Rama and then says "I have been relieved of my curse by You. Dig a pit and bury me in it". Therefore, it is Viradha who asked for his own killing at the hands of Rama; and that too took place only in the absence of Sita.

Thus, the objection raised about Viradha vadham is rejected.
