Vyakhyana Saram:
In the previous shloka, Swami Desikan spoke of His protecting the samsaris. In this shloka, he talks about that protection that He gives during His avataras. The meaning of the Gita shloka "paritrANAya sAdhUnAm" is the second part of this shloka.

Vedanta Desikan shows the six qualities of the avataras that He takes. These follow the Bhagavad Gita shlokas in the fourth adhyaya that are described as Avatara Adhyaya. These six qualities are:

  1. Whenever adharma raises its head in this world, He takes many types of avataras (nAnAvidhai:).
  2. These avataras are not false (akapaTai: satyai:). This rejects those who claim that avataras are 'indrajAladivat mityA'.
  3. During an avatara, He does not lose His natural qualities. He appears with all those qualities (ajahatsvabhAvai:). Azhvar said the same in "Adhiyam sOdhi uruvai angu vaiththu ingu piRandha".
  4. In His avatara, His divine form is not made of anything of this world, like the other beings are (aprAkR^itai:).
  5. He is not born in these avataras due to karmas, but because of His divine wish (nija vihAravashena siddhai:).
  6. His avataras are not meant to experience karmas; they are for the protection of His devotees and to remove their obstacles (AtmIya rakshaNa vipaksha vinAshana arthai:).
